The Setting
An American university during the latter half
of the spring term in 1983, at the height of the
nuclear arms race.
|
|
Another Antigone
was first produced in March 1987 at the Old Globe Theatre in San
Diego, California.
The play opened at Playwrights Horizons in New York City in January, 1988 and is dedicated by
the playwright to John Tillinger.

Production Notes
Director's Notes
Reagan was in the White House. Educational standards
in the United States were at an all time low.
With the build up of U.S. and Soviet nuclear weapons
at home and abroad, the threat of nuclear war
was at an all time high. Outcry and public protests
were commonplace in both Europe and here in America.
This was the world in 1983, and the world of this
play.
Fortunately, as Dean Eberhart mentions in the
play, "Times change." But sometimes, the more
things change, the more they stay the same. Many
of the issues that Another Antigone presents
are still with us today. Recent WTO events in
Seattle, our own city or "polis" remind us of
the timeless struggle between unyielding civil
authority and rebellious individual expression.
Gurney's modern re-invention of the Antigone myth
still resonates today, as does Sophocles' classic
which was written over two millenniums ago.
